The Six Principles of Pilates

Pilates is a lifelong system that strengthens muscles and increases flexibility to protect joints and bones. So this isn’t just a random selection of certain moves. This system is based on some principles. When you apply the principles that I will explain to you while exercising, you will see positive effects.

1.Breathing

Breath allows us to establish the connection between mind and body. For this reason, breathing is integrated into all pilates exercises.

2.Concentration

Concentration allows movements to be performed more accurately and firmly. If you do not have concentration, the exercises you do will lose their purpose. In addition, thanks to concentration, you can prevent possible injuries that may result from wrong and uncontrolled movements.

3.Centering

The center is the circumference of the belly, waist and hips. This center contains the internal organs and the musculature around the spine. Thus, you should do all the exercises from the center outward. The primary purpose is to create a strong, fixed and flexible centre. A strong center will also cause correct movement in the limbs.

4.Control

Control is very important in Pilates. You must practice movements, positions, sequences and alignments under the control of the mind, paying attention to all details. If your mind doesn’t have control over the body, you cannot exercise.

5.Precision

Precision is defined as the form in which the movement is fully performed. Understanding this principle may require some knowledge of anatomy. For example, if you know which muscle is working while performing a movement, you can stabilize and align your body correctly. In this way, you will have a better understanding of the purpose of the exercise.

6.Flow

We can explain this principle as performing exercises within themselves and without disconnecting from each other. This will improve with practice and will begin to become more flow after each movement and each session.
