Slow Food Movement

Today, globalization has caused cities to resemble each other. Unfortunately, this situation has begun to destroy the identities of cities. When you think about it, you will realize that the traditional lifestyle has disappeared. This is why some social movements have emerged. And slow food is one of these social movements.

What is Slow Food?

Slow Food is a movement born against globalization that threatens the traditional way of life. In addition, it is an organization that aims to preserve food tastes and life and develops gastronomic culture.

A History of Slow Food

Carlo Petrini started the slow food movement in Italy. The reason for this was to react to the McDonalds that will be opened in Piazza di Spagna in Rome. Of course, his purpose was not just to protest McDonalds. The focus is not just on nutrition. It stands up to ‘fast food’ in more ways than one.

A group of Italian activists has prepared a manifesto that can be considered the foundation of slow food. This manifesto both focuses on the negative aspects of fast life and created an alternative to mass-produced food.

The negative consequences of globalization, according to the slow food manifesto:

  • Threat to biodiversity
  • The disappearance of small producers
  • Extinction of low-profit species, vegetables, fruits and grains
  • Loss of cultural identity

Here, the slow food movement took its place in history against all these negativities. It currently has over 100,000 members in over 130 countries.

Good, Clean, Fair

The three tenets of Slow Food’s philosophy food and food production:

  • Good: The food should be good. It means that the food tastes good without spoiling its naturalness.
  • Clean: Food must be produced without harming human health and nature.
  • Fair: Food should be affordable for consumers. At the same time, producers should receive fair compensation for the work they do.

We can include the principles of slow food in our lives. So how can we incorporate these principles into our lives? We can start by avoiding processed foods, partially growing our own food.
